It is not uncommon for anxieties, nerves, and overreaction to turn a basic traffic stop into a nightmare. So, here are a few tips to remember during a traffic stop:
- Stay Calm – No Matter What. Resist the urge to lose your temper and insult the officer. You don’t have to like or agree with the traffic stop, but in the end, you’ll preserve your credibility…especially if the traffic stop is captured on camera.
- Stay in the Car and Keep Your Hands Visible. Most police officers have no reason to suspect that a motorist is armed and dangerous. However, keeping your hands visible is the simplest way to stay safe.
- Cooperate With Request for License and Insurance. If stopped, you’ll save yourself major hassles by simply providing your license and insurance.
- Save Your Disagreements for Court. If you disagree with the stop, yelling and insulting the officer will get you no where. You will have an opportunity to dispute a citation in court.
- If Commanded by the Officer, Exit the Vehicle. Police can ask a motorist to exit the vehicle for a wide variety of reasons. If the officer asks you to exit the vehicle, it’s best to do so. You’re free to ask afterwards why.
- Remember Your Rights. Police must conclude the purpose of the traffic stop within a reasonable amount of time and absent a warrant or probable cause, police have no right to search your vehicle.
These are just a few of the many things to remember during a traffic stop. The simplest advice is to remain calm, be respectful, and save your time to fight your case for the courtroom.
